The NGO Child and Environment was  set up in 1995 to provide assistance to extremely poor, socially deprived children. A team of volunteers (teachers, a doctor and a psychologist) provided food and warm clothes, rendered street lessons, taught reading and writing to street children in public parks, gardens, underground and railway stations and marketplaces. In beginning, the behaviour of the team caused surprise and certain irritation among surrounding people, but it inspired the children who thirsted relations. The number of children who responded to the team increased day by day.
